Bill Clinton a former US President will be arriving in St Lucia today, Thursday, August 09, 2018. The 42nd US president will meet with St Lucia’s Prime Minister Allan Chastanet and other government and LUCELEC officials for the official opening of the First Industrial Solar Farm at La Tourney, Vieux Fort.
The Clinton Initiative for Global Network has been partnering with Caribbean countries in building resilience to climate change. The foundation will be traveling to Miami, Saint Lucia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands this month.
Carmy Joseph Corporate Communications Officer at LUCELEC reported that the presence of the former president will provide an opportunity for the different stakeholders in the project to come together to celebrate this occasion. She also mentioned that LUCELEC broke grounds of the Solar Farm last year and in April of this year the Farm went live and has been supplying power to the country for a few months now.
The project came on stream in November, 2017 and is a part of LUCELEC’s effort to decrease its use of fossil fuel to generate electricity.
Joseph proudly stated that this is the single largest renewable energy project in St Lucia. She also stated that this project will provide up to five percent (5%) of the country’s power needs.
