On Monday June 18th, rapper/ singer XXXTentacion was shot dead in Florida in what police believe to be a robbery attempt.
The 20 year old whose real name is Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy was shot outside a motorcycle dealership shortly before 4 pm and was pronounced dead on Monday evening at the Fort Lauderdale hospital.
Stephanie Martinez, a neighbourhood resident, was on her way home when 3 gunshots sounded. She then drove down to the end of the street where she saw the body of the rapper in the car.
“He has his mouth open and his hand out. Two people went over and checked his pulse,” said Martinez, who also saw blood. “It’s just weird because he should’ve had security and stuff with him.”
The rapper first found an audience by uploading his songs to Soundcloud where he was hailed as a breakthrough talent. However his fame was overshadowed by his legal problems which didn’t seem to bother fans sending his latest album to number 1 in the US.
After the shocking news, tributes quickly poured in on social media from other entertainers in the industry and fans.
Documentary maker Louis Theroux said: “Notwithstanding personal demons, he was a huge talent & bringing a beautiful new feel to hip hop. So sad.”
